Solidarity Walk

Pride is resistance.

Resisting those who try to silence us, diminish us, and divide us.

It all began this way on June 28th, 1969 with Marsha P. Johnson; a Black, Transgender woman, leading The Stonewall Riots. This sparked the gay rights movement as we know it, lead us to the parades and festivals celebrating pride today, and is the reason that June was chosen as the international Pride month.

“A tipping point in history where we know, with absolute clarity, that everything changed.” – Manhattan Borough president, Gale. A. Brewer 2015

Despite being this driving force behind one of the greatest human rights movements in history, Queer People of Colour, particularly Trans Women of Colour remain some of the most vulnerable and overlooked members of our community today.

We are choosing a Solidarity Walk instead of a parade to pay homage to this community-driven resistance, and pay homage Marsha P. Johnson and all of those before us who fought and died in order to propel us forward into a world of love and acceptance.

We acknowledge that while they conquered amazing feats, there is still more work to be done and we will carry that torch forward in their name. We at Airdrie Pride recognize the impact of intersectionality and commit to ongoing inclusion and support of all of our community members, especially those most at risk.  “Queer liberation, not rainbow capitalism” – unknown.

No in-uniform participation.

No political parties.

No marketing.

No corporations.

No second agenda.

This is by the people, for the people. Where our community will stand together, in solidarity, as a testament of our unity, resilience, and refusal to go quietly into the night.

Gather at city hall at 10:30 am for the land acknowledgement and to introduce all of our pride festivities.

We will begin the walk down Main Street at 11 am.  It will be lead by the QPOC (Queer People of Colour) community as well as disabled folks, or anyone with mobility difficulties, at the front in order to set the pace and make sure no community member is left behind.

Beginning at Airdrie’s City Hall Parking Lot and moving south along Main Street to the Nose Creek Park Entrance at Allen Street.

Please note:  Parking is available at Nose Creek Park, or at Towerlane Mall.  There is NO TRANSPORTATION between the two locations.   It is approximately a one-kilometre walk between destinations.
