Our Response to Resolution 8

The Alberta government has proposed a policy that would “require teachers, schools, and school boards to obtain the written consent of the parent/guardian of a student under the age of 16 to changing the name and/or pronouns used by the student” (UCP AGM 2023 Agenda Policy and Governance Resolutions – Resolution 8).

As per Airdrie Pride Society’s Position Statement on Trans and Queer Discrimination in Canada, enacting a policy such as this is fundamentally against human rights and may encourage unsafe environments for trans, queer, and gender-diverse youth to come out.

If you oppose Resolution 8, consider sending an email or letter to your MLA before Friday, November 3 when the UCP AGM begins. We have created a template that you are welcome to use when emailing your MLA.
