Hello Airdrie!
My name is Kiersten Mohr, and I am proud to say that since March of 2017 I have been one of the Airdrie Pride Society Board members. I am thrilled to be a part of building a more open and inclusive Airdrie and working hard to ensure that nobody ever has to leave our community to find their community!
My wife and I moved to Airdrie in 2004 and very quickly this city started to feel like home. Our roots began to take hold, and within a few years we started our family and now have two beautiful children (7&10) that fill our home with energy and love.
By day I work as a Geoscience Manager with a multinational Oil and Gas company in Calgary. I have spent the last fifteen years of my life in this fast-paced corporate world and have very much enjoyed all I have learned and experienced. Over the last few years, I also have developed an interest in Psychology and am currently pursuing a psychology degree at Queen’s University. Lastly, I am a passionate board member of the Skipping Stone Foundation which is working to rewrite the narratives of today’s gender diverse youth and celebrate the strengths and uniqueness found within their diversity.
Why did I get involved?
I identify as a transgender woman and in early 2017, with my family beside me, I navigated gender transition in my professional and personal life. I have been incredibly inspired and emboldened by the positive experience of this transition and want to now use my visibility and voice to help promote positive public awareness, understanding and inclusion of the LGBTQ2+ community.
My life experience has helped me appreciate how overwhelming and intimidating it can be to live authentically in our lives – whatever that means for all of us. In contrast, I also now understand how much happiness can be unlocked by being true and living as we are all meant to live. My journey has made me truly appreciate the importance of supportive friends, family and community. I have come to realize that when support is in place, it creates an opening, or space, for people to be more genuine and live happier and more fulfilling lives. All of this awareness now provides me with incredible fuel to work in our community and help to create safe and inclusive spaces for the LGBTQ2+ community.
Definitely keep your eyes on Airdrie Pride! As Kayla mentioned last week, we are swamped behind the scenes working to build a strong foundation of support and connection in this beautiful city. If you have any questions, ideas, suggestions, or anything else, please don’t hesitate to contact us! We look forward to meeting ANYONE that wants to be part of building this fantastic community.
Kiersten
